🏳️‍🌈 LGBT+ Art & History Tour at Tate Modern 🎨

📅 Saturday 7th November
⏰ Meet at 1:45pm
📍 Outside Tate Modern
🎤 Hosted by Joel
🍴 Food afterwards
🏁 Expected finish: around 6pm

Join BGO for an afternoon exploring LGBT+ art, history and culture at Tate Modern, led by our wonderful host Joel.

LGBT+ people have always played an important role in British and international culture, even during periods when laws, discrimination and social expectations meant that many were unable to live or work openly.

As we explore the galleries, Joël will guide us through artworks and stories that connect with different parts of LGBTQ+ history. We’ll look at how artists have used coded imagery, explored gender and identity, documented queer lives, challenged established ideas, and used art as a form of activism and remembrance.

This won’t be about being an art expert! 🖼️

Instead, we’ll look at what we can see in the artwork, what we know about the artist and its historical context, and what each of us brings to it as a viewer. There may be completely different interpretations along the way, and that’s all part of the conversation.

Expect a relaxed and thought-provoking afternoon with plenty of opportunity to look, learn, chat and share perspectives with other BGO members.

🍴 After the tour, we’ll find somewhere nearby to grab a bite to eat and continue the social. We expect to wrap things up at around 6pm, although you’re welcome to head off earlier if needed.

Whether you’re an art lover, a history nerd, curious to learn something new, or simply fancy spending a Saturday afternoon with some lovely BGO humans, come and join us! 🌈

---------------------------------------------------

1. Where and when are we meeting?
We’ll meet outside Tate Modern at 1:45pm on Saturday 7th November. Please arrive a little early so we can get everyone together before heading inside.

2. What time will the tour start?
We’ll aim to head into the gallery and begin at around 2:00pm.

3. Who is hosting the event?
Our wonderful Joël will be hosting and leading the afternoon, guiding us through the galleries and helping bring some of the LGBT+ stories and context behind the artworks to life.

4. Do I need to know anything about art or LGBT+ history?
Not at all! This event is designed to be relaxed, accessible and enjoyable whether you’re an art obsessive or haven’t stepped inside a gallery for years.

5. What will we be looking at?
We’ll explore artworks connected to LGBT+ history, identity, gender, activism and queer culture, while also discussing the wider historical and social context surrounding them.

6. Will it feel like a formal guided tour?
No. The idea is to keep things conversational and interactive. Joel will provide context and talking points, but there’ll also be plenty of room for discussion, different interpretations and your own thoughts.

7. How much does it cost?
Entry to Tate Modern’s permanent collection is free. If there are any optional paid exhibitions on the day, these won’t be required as part of the BGO event.

8. What happens after the gallery?
Once we’ve finished exploring, we’ll head somewhere nearby to grab a bite to eat and continue the social.

9. What time will the event finish?
We expect to wrap things up at around 6pm, although timings may be slightly flexible depending on the group and where we decide to eat afterwards.

10. Can I come alone?
Absolutely. Plenty of people attend BGO events on their own, and you’ll be welcomed into the group from the start. If you’re feeling nervous about joining, feel free to message Matty or Owain privately beforehand.
