This is a field-based exploration combining river tracking, guided wilderness treks, and immersive wildlife observation in one of Nepal’s most untouched ecosystems. As you navigate these remote river systems in pursuit of the elusive dolphin, you will also encounter the remarkable biodiversity of Bardia, home to Bengal Tigers, One-horned Rhinoceroses, Elephants, and Exceptional Birdlife.
Beyond the wildlife, this expedition offers a deeper connection to conservation, local ecosystems, and the untamed beauty of Nepal’s lowland wilderness creating a rare and meaningful experience for explorers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
Ganges River Dolphins can be found across parts of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, but few places offer the same level of wilderness, exclusivity, and expedition value as Western Nepal. In the Karnali–Geruwa river system within Bardia National Park, the habitat remains remote, less disturbed, and far less commercialised than other river locations creating a setting where encounters are not staged, but earned.
Unlike more accessible sites elsewhere, where sightings can feel predictable or crowded, Nepal offers a low-pressure, high-integrity environment where tracking dolphins requires patience, field awareness, and expert guidance. This results in a far more authentic and rewarding experience for serious explorers, photographers, and filmmakers.
Beyond the species itself, this region provides access to one of South Asia’s most intact riverine ecosystems where shifting river channels, rich biodiversity, and real conservation challenges can be experienced firsthand. In Nepal, the expedition is not just about seeing the dolphin, it is about understanding the landscape, the ecosystem, and the story behind one of the world’s rarest freshwater mammals.
River dolphins are rare freshwater cetaceans that inhabit some of the world’s largest river systems, including the Ganges–Brahmaputra basin of South Asia. Unlike their ocean-dwelling relatives, species such as the Ganges River Dolphin have evolved to survive in murky, fast-changing rivers, relying less on vision and more on advanced echolocation to navigate and hunt. Often referred to as “living fossils,” they represent one of the oldest surviving lineages of dolphins. Highly adapted yet extremely vulnerable, river dolphins are indicators of river health—when they thrive, the ecosystem is still functioning.
AWPC WILDHUB Travel goes beyond traditional wildlife tours and pioneers a new category of wildlife-challenge expeditions. We design field-based, experience-first journeys across Asia and beyond the wildest frontiers, where tracking, patience, and real exploration define the experience. Nepal offers one of the last truly wild, low-disturbance habitats for the endangered Ganges River Dolphin and the Karnali, Geruwa, and Mohana river systems around Bardia National Park are among the most reliable places to pursue them in a natural, non-commercial setting. Unlike more crowded and predictable river locations in the region, these rivers remain remote, dynamic, and largely untouched, where sightings are not staged but earned through real tracking and field expertise.
This landscape also delivers far more than a single species. Bardia is one of South Asia’s most intact ecosystems, offering the chance to encounter tigers, rhinos, elephants, and rich birdlife on the same expedition. The interconnected river channels, floodplains, and forest corridors create a rare environment where wildlife movement, river behaviour, and conservation realities can be experienced first-hand.
We selected this region because it offers what few places still can—authentic wilderness, minimal pressure, and a true expedition environment. In Nepal, the journey is not just about seeing the river dolphin, it is about tracking it in one of the wildest remaining landscapes in Asia.
This matrix sets real expectations based on season (July/Monsoon), habitat, and field conditions. It’s designed for serious travelers who value honest probabilities over promises.
👉 These species are commonly encountered across forest edges, grasslands, and riverbanks.
👉 Sightings depend on timing, river conditions, and movement patterns. Multiple field sessions increase chances.
👉 These require luck, patience, and the right conditions. Any sighting is a significant highlight.
👉 These are unpredictable moments that define true expeditions.
This is a challenge expedition, not a guaranteed-sighting tour. The value lies in authentic tracking, real conditions, and meaningful encounters—not checklists.
This expedition offers a rare opportunity to experience wildlife the way it truly exists—raw, unpredictable, and deeply immersive. Set in one of Nepal’s most untouched ecosystems around Bardia National Park, it goes beyond conventional safaris to deliver a field-based challenge where encounters are earned through tracking, patience, and expert guidance. You are not just observing wildlife—you are stepping into its world, navigating remote river systems, and exploring landscapes where few travellers go. Designed for those who seek authenticity over comfort, this journey combines rare species pursuit, meaningful exploration, and a real conservation context, making it a far more rewarding and memorable experience than any standard wildlife tour.
The wild gives us unforgettable experiences, and we believe it deserves something in return. Through this expedition, AWPC WILDHUB contributes to the Gentle Giants Project supporting river dolphin conservation in Nepal (2026/27) — helping protect the ecosystems and gentle giants that make journeys like this possible.
