Unlike most books about dementia and memory loss which primarily focus on dealing with all the horrific aspects of the disease, Eliezer's book focuses on the unexpected joy, laughter and deep healing his mother's ordeal brought to their family. He found that beyond memory, language, shared history and the story of their life together, all of which slowly faded into oblivion, what remained was a striking and profound sense of connection that was all that mattered to him in the end. "Connection is everything," is fundamental message of The Silver Lining of Alzheimer's. Sobel asserts that once we have thoroughly grieved the loss of our loved one and reached a place of acceptance, we have the opportunity to connect to and be with the person who is still there,  a living breathing human being whose inner world is a fascinating mystery to discover. In his own mother's case, as her history of being a Holocaust survivor faded, the fearful and angry person she had once been transformed into a radiant, loving woman with a childlike innocence and delight.
